Fans of plain legal language will already be familiar with Thomas M. Cooley Law School Professor (and Board member since 2023) Mark Cooney.
After graduating first in his class from Cooley in 1992, Mark worked in private practice for ten years, specializing in civil appeals and chairing the State Bar’s Appellate Practice Section. He later returned to his alma mater as a professor, chairing the Research & Writing Department for 14 years and teaching the next generation of lawyers to use direct, clear language that connects with busy readers.
A gifted writer himself, Mark has published two books and more than 50 articles on legal writing, appellate practice, and tort law. In addition, he was Editor in Chief of The Scribes Journal of Legal Writing for six volumes and continues to serve as a Senior Editor.
For a bit of humor, readers should check out Mark’s frequently republished retelling of A Christmas Carol.
